Sungsimdang in Daejeon: Which Branch, What Time, and What's Worth the Line
The Daejeon Station store and the main store are not the same stop. Which branch fits your trip, when the line is shortest, and what to buy.

The bakery isn't the hard part. Choosing the right door is.
- Daejeon is about 52 minutes from Seoul by KTX (per a 2026 timetable listing; another 2026 guide says "about an hour"). It sits on the Seoul–Busan line, so it works as a stopover.
- Sungsimdang's branches aren't interchangeable. The Daejeon Station store (2nd floor, 07:00–22:30) sells popular gift breads but no cakes. The main store (Eunhaeng-dong) and the Cake Boutique carry the full range and the cakes.
- The line: about 200 people outside the main store at 4 p.m. on a Tuesday in August 2026, in 37°C heat (JoongAng Daily); another outlet reported 500. One guide expects a 30–60 minute wait on weekends and suggests 9–11 a.m.
- Verdict: the station store for a stopover, the main store on a weekday morning if Daejeon is the destination. Not an August afternoon.
Why is there a line at Sungsimdang?
Sungsimdang (성심당) started in 1956 as a steamed-bun stall in front of Daejeon Station (대전역). Today Daejeon is known for its own "bakery pilgrimage": The Korea Times (16 May 2026) reported that a Bread Taxi service now has a Bread Bus companion, launched in May 2026, and that the taxi was booked through the end of the year. The trip has become about the line as much as the bread, so it pays to plan around it.

The hours come from one 2026 guide, and Sungsimdang's own site doesn't list them by branch. They can change, so check before you go.
A Note From Daniel — our real human editorI've gone to the Daejeon Station store more often. It's easy to stop by between trains on a work trip, and it's convenient for picking up bread that's already packed as a gift. There's even a set of the most popular breads bundled together. For the main store on a weekend, some people leave Seoul at dawn to get there, that's how busy it is. If all you want is bread, the station store is more convenient and the line should be shorter. It still has a wait on crowded weekends, though, so give yourself about an hour so you don't miss your train.
How long is the line, really?
- 5 August 2026 (JoongAng Daily): about 200 people at the main store and Cake Boutique around 4 p.m. on a Tuesday, in a heat wave. Sungsimdang handed out roughly 6,000 bottles of frozen water and 500 loaner parasols a day, and about 15 unmanned lockers nearby charge ₩2,700–8,000 depending on how long you leave things.
- Weekends: a 30–60 minute wait, with 9–11 a.m. the recommended window (one February 2026 information site).
- Daejeon Station store: about 30 minutes on a Saturday afternoon (July 2026 guide) and no wait at around 8 a.m. on a weekday (one 2026 guide). One guide mentions a fast lane for signature items only.
- During the heat wave, reports also mentioned ambulances called for heat-related illness among people waiting.
What's actually worth the line?
Fried soboro (튀김소보로) is the bread that made the place, at about ₩1,700 (one February 2026 information site). Red bean bread is in the same range and chocolate fried soboro about ₩2,000. Buyers often take 5–10 at a time, so a dozen comes to roughly ₩21,000 by our arithmetic. Bakery prices move with ingredient costs, so treat these as a rough guide. Siru cakes can be reserved online, with a separate pickup line (January 2026 guide). Don't stand in the cake line without a reservation. Bread and cake are different queues.
A Note From Daniel — our real human editorFried soboro is by far the most famous thing here. After a trip to Daejeon, bringing some back has become close to a required gift. Chive bread (부추빵) is very popular too.
What else can you do between trains?
- Daejeon Hanwha Life Ballpark: opened 5 March 2025, holds about 20,000, and the nearest station is Daejeon Sports Complex on Line 1, roughly 10–15 minutes from Daejeon Station. For the game itself, see how to watch a Korean baseball game.
- Bread Taxi and Bread Bus: a February 2026 Aju Press ride-along covered a two-hour route through five bakeries, including Sungsimdang's Lotte branch. Prices weren't listed.
- Bags: use the lockers nearby (₩2,700–8,000) and buy the bread on your way out.

Go once, and pick the door. If you're changing trains, the station store. If Daejeon is the point, the main store on a weekday between 9 and 11. An August afternoon line isn't worth it. And if you hate lines, skip it, because Seoul has plenty of bakeries and the stopover works without it.
