Daiso Korea: What's Actually Worth Suitcase Space

Six prices, nothing over ₩5,000, and about half the beauty aisle not worth carrying home. What clears the re-purchase test — and what's cheap for a reason.

The beauty aisle at a multi-floor Daiso branch

Nothing at Daiso Korea costs more than ₩5,000 — about $3.70. There are six prices, full stop: ₩500, ₩1,000, ₩1,500, ₩2,000, ₩3,000, ₩5,000. That one rule is why the beauty section is now the busiest aisle in the store, and why about half of what's in it isn't worth carrying home.

As of April 2026, Daiso's beauty range is roughly 170 brands and 1,900 products. Some items have gone viral — the VT "needle shot" ampoule is the most cited — and the pattern is the same each time: take a category people find expensive, put a version under ₩5,000, watch it sell out. The customer base has widened with it, from twenties and thirties to forties and fifties (shoppers in their forties were the single largest share of Daiso cosmetics sales in 2025, at about 29%).

Worth buying (clears the re-purchase test)

  • Basic skincare. The VT Cica line, hydrating toners and creams — ₩3,000–5,000. The formulas are fine on the ingredient list, and not many brands give you this much for the price. Verdict: buy — but check the volume. A ₩5,000 product at 300ml is a deal; at 50ml it's just a decant.
  • Beauty tools. Nail clippers, tweezers, foot files, makeup sponges, hair clips and claws — ₩1,000–3,000. Most of the things a packing list tells you to bring from home are right here, and Korean nail clippers are genuinely good. Verdict: buy.
  • Travel supplies. Silicone bottles (100ml and under), pouches, folding brushes, laundry detergent sheets, compression bags — ₩1,000–3,000. Verdict: buy — except travel adapters, which have electricity in them (see below).

A false economy (there's a reason it's cheap)

  • Anything with electricity in it. Cables, earbuds, power banks, adapters, mini fans — ₩2,000–5,000. The certification, lifespan, and safety margin match the price and no more. Verdict: skip.
  • Colour cosmetics. A ₩5,000 lipstick or eyeshadow performs like a ₩5,000 lipstick — pigment, wear time, and shade range included. Fine for a one-trip item, not for a kit. Verdict: conditional.
  • Character collaborations. Sanrio and Disney pouches and stationery — cute, but that's the licence you're paying for, not the product. Verdict: fine if you want it for the design; not a practical buy.
  • Stationery in general. The masking tape and pens are usable, but Korea is a strong stationery country — spend a little more elsewhere and get a lot more.

What this means if you're visiting

  • Daiso is where you top up what you forgot, not a shopping destination. The suitcase categories are basic skincare, tools, and travel supplies. That's it.
  • Go to a big branch. The Myeongdong store runs several floors and holds deep stock; there's a large one in Gangnam too. Neighbourhood branches have a small beauty section.
  • Tax refund. The threshold is ₩15,000 on one receipt, but not every branch is registered for it — check before you pay. The amounts are usually small enough to skip.
  • Card works everywhere. You don't need cash.
DanielA Note From Daniel — our real human editor

Daiso is somewhere Koreans dip into constantly — the deal is simply that it's cheap, so you buy expecting to use a thing a few times and let it go. The one place to slow down is anything for your skin or your mouth: a product can be packaged to look almost exactly like the one a specialty store sells and still be a different formulation or size inside.

Need to know

Daiso Korea price tiers: ₩500 / ₩1,000 / ₩1,500 / ₩2,000 / ₩3,000 / ₩5,000 — nothing above ₩5,000. Largest Seoul branches: Myeongdong (multi-floor) and Gangnam. Card accepted everywhere. Tax refund possible on receipts of ₩15,000+ but not offered at every branch. Best value: basic skincare, grooming tools, travel supplies. Weakest value: electronics, colour cosmetics, licensed-character goods.

YunaYuna's Tip

Turn the skincare product over and read two numbers before it goes in your basket: the volume in ml, and the manufacturing or expiry date. Daiso beauty moves fast and stock sits in bright light. A ₩5,000 cream is only a deal if it's full-size and fresh — otherwise you're paying convenience-store prices for a sample.
