K-fragrance is the next K-beauty export wave. Four brands to know, what each smells like, price bands, where the flagships are, and how to pack a bottle home.

By the export numbers, the next Korean beauty category isn't skincare — it's perfume. Korea's fragrance exports hit a monthly record in January 2026 (about US$6.5 million), and that same month Korea ran a fragrance trade surplus with the US for the first time in 28 years. The industry calls this "K-fragrance" and treats it as the next wave after K-beauty.
For a visitor, that means two things: the stores are worth walking through even if you only test, and a 50ml bottle is a genuinely good thing to bring home.
- Four names to remember: Tamburins (탬버린즈), Nonfiction (논픽션), Granhand (그랑핸드), Borntostandout.
- Korean scents tend to sit close to the skin — the opposite of loud and heavy. On a test strip they can read as "faint"; that's the intended direction.
- Price: roughly ₩90,000–260,000 for 50ml. Incheon Airport duty-free carries some Tamburins and Nonfiction scents at a small discount.
- Where the stores cluster: Seongsu (성수동), Hannam-dong (한남동), Bukchon (북촌), Sinsa (신사동).
- Luggage: a 50ml bottle is fine in carry-on (under the 100ml liquid rule). Multiple full-size bottles go in checked baggage — check your airline's limit.
Why Korean fragrance now?
Perfume used to be a category Korea leaned heavily on imports for. That flipped over the last two or three years. Domestic niche houses found their footing, and their sensibility — scent worn "like clothing" rather than a statement, and a brand pushed as a single coherent aesthetic — started landing abroad. UK searches for Korean perfume grew about 20% from April 2025 to 2026.
Tamburins — when the store is the brand
This is the fragrance house from the company that made Gentle Monster. The lineage shows — the flagships in Sinsa, Seongsu, and Samcheong (삼청) read more like galleries than perfume shops: large sculptural objects, spare displays, the scents placed as part of the room. Jennie of BLACKPINK and the actor Byeon Woo-seok are ambassadors.
The scents themselves tend toward a creamy woody base with herbal or fruity layers on top. It started with hand cream and diffusers; the perfume line came later. Buying here is partly buying the store experience, and that's not a knock — this is a brand you visit to see how the space was designed.
Nonfiction — fragrance built like a book
Minimalist and text-forward. The bottles look like book titles, and each scent comes with a written "chapter." The mood is neutral and cerebral — it doesn't announce itself, and it's the kind of thing that prompts "what are you wearing?" It's a quietly influential house in the Korean niche scene. Stores in Hannam and Seongsu.
Granhand — the cosy end
Around eight stores across Seoul (Bukchon among them). Handmade, with poetic names and combinations — "Susie Salmon" is described as smelling like "a midday nap after eating sweet fruits," and "Lumberjack" pairs clove bud and cedarwood for "a sip of whiskey in front of the fireplace." The price band is lower than the two above, so it's an easy first Korean fragrance.
Borntostandout — the bold end
More character, more niche. The scents have a strong point of view, so they divide people — which means the ones you like, you really like. The highest price band of the four.

Where do you test and buy?
Each brand has its own flagship, and most sit in Seongsu, Hannam, Bukchon, or Sinsa. In Seongsu you can fit Tamburins and Nonfiction into the same loop as the streetwear stores. Test properly in person before you buy — because of the close-to-the-skin direction, an online description doesn't tell you much.
Duty-free: Incheon Airport carries some Tamburins and Nonfiction scents slightly below city prices. If you have time on your way out, compare.
A Note From Daniel — our real human editorThe Tamburins store in Seongsu is part of a bigger complex — the Gentle Monster showroom, the Nudake dessert café, Haus Nowhere — so you can do all of it in one stop. The building is unusual from the outside, and the ground floor is Gentle Monster's exhibition space, with the theme changing each season. It's busy on weekdays, not just weekends.
How do you pack it?
- One 50ml bottle — carry-on, inside the 100ml liquid limit. Put it in the zip bag.
- Multiple full-size bottles — checked baggage. Perfume and cologne are classed as flammable, so airlines cap the total (commonly 2 litres total, up to 0.5 litres per container). Check the rule before you buy several.
- It's glass — wrap it in clothing, in the middle of the case.
