The Seoul Buildings Worth Going Out of Your Way For

Not photo backdrops — buildings where you can read the architect off the structure. Zaha Hadid's DDP, the Leeum's three architects, Kim Swoo-geun's brick, and what's next.

Seoul has a lot of famous buildings. But "famous" and "worth going to see" aren't the same thing. What's here isn't a list of pretty photo backdrops — it's buildings where you can read what the architect was thinking straight off the structure.

For the last twenty years, Seoul has kept handing big projects to world-class architects. The results are scattered across the city.

The short version
  • DDP (Dongdaemun Design Plaza) — Zaha Hadid, 2014. A curved aluminum shell with almost no right angles. Interior hours are roughly 10:00–20:00 (check the DDP site), and the shell is best seen from outside at night. Dongdaemun.
  • Leeum Museum of Art — Mario Botta, Jean Nouvel, and Rem Koolhaas, one building each. 2004. On the slope of Namsan, in Hannam-dong.
  • MMCA Seoul — a former military-command building stitched to new construction. 2013. Samcheong, next to Gyeongbokgung.
  • Kim Swoo-geun's brick buildings — Kyungdong Church (1981) and the former Space building (now ARARIO Museum). The source of modern Korean architecture.
  • Oil Tank Culture Park — five 1970s oil tanks turned into a cultural space. Mapo.
  • Nodeul Island — a Heatherwick Studio design, due to open in 2028 (construction began in late 2025). A skywalk over the Han River. You can't visit yet.
  • How to read one: at each building, find one thing — the material, the light, or the circulation — and look at only that.

Why is the DDP shaped like that?

The DDP was designed by Zaha Hadid and opened in 2014. Her signature is right there — you barely see a right angle or a column, and floor, wall, and ceiling run into each other as one continuous curve. The skin is more than 45,000 aluminum panels, each bent to a different curvature.

It's also a contested building. It was built on the site of the old Dongdaemun Stadium, and the criticism that it doesn't fit the context of the Dongdaemun (동대문) markets around it has never really gone away. But that friction is part of why you go. Inside are exhibition halls, shops, and conference space, and the interior generally keeps daytime hours (roughly 10:00–20:00; check the DDP site), but the shell is worth walking at night from outside, following its curve.

DanielA Note From Daniel — our real human editor

My office is in Dongdaemun, so I walk past the DDP almost every day. The building runs a seasonal media-art light show called Seoullight DDP, projected onto the exterior — it's usually on in autumn, paired with music, and it's a great outdoor evening thing to catch on a cool fall night. Worth timing your visit around if your trip lines up.

What should you look at inside the Leeum?

The Leeum is a museum where three architects each built one building.

  • Museum 1 — Mario Botta. It holds traditional ceramics and painting. The symbol is an inverted brick cone (the rotonda). Architecture of earth and weight.
  • Museum 2 — Jean Nouvel. Modern and contemporary art. Corroded stainless steel and glass, black. The opposite materials to Museum 1.
  • The Education and Culture Center — Rem Koolhaas. A black box that appears to float.

The three buildings sit on one site speaking three different languages, and that contrast is the reason to go. It's on the Namsan (남산) slope in Hannam-dong (한남동), so the Han River (한강) view is good too.

Why is MMCA Seoul so many buildings joined together?

The Seoul branch of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (2013) kept the buildings of a former military command — some more than a century old — and inserted new construction between them. Old brick buildings, courtyards, and new galleries dug down into the ground run into one another, so the era keeps changing as you walk. It's next to Gyeongbokgung and the Samcheong (삼청동) hanok, so its location — a contemporary art museum in the middle of old Seoul — is part of the design.

Why does Kim Swoo-geun matter?

Kim Swoo-geun (1931–1986) is the founding figure of modern Korean architecture. Two buildings are enough:

  • Kyungdong Church (1981) — in Jangchung-dong (장충동). A mass of red brick that looks hand-stacked, with no front — you enter by walking around the side. Inside, light pours in at the end of a narrow passage. (Our piece on Kyungdong Church.)
  • The former Space building — in Wonseo-dong, next to Changdeokgung. A black-brick building covered in ivy, now used as ARARIO Museum in SPACE. Inside, small rooms connect on half-levels, stepping past each other.

What else is there?

  • Oil Tank Culture Park — five 1970s oil-storage tanks on Maebongsan in Mapo, converted into a cultural space in 2017. The experience is walking inside enormous industrial structures.
  • SeMA Bunker — in Yeouido. An underground space once thought to be a Cold War-era secret bunker, now used as a gallery.
  • Nodeul Island — Heatherwick Studio is redesigning an artificial island in the Han River. The plan includes a skywalk connecting small islets, an arts center, and a public beach, and it's *due to open in 2028. It's a construction site right now — so, next trip.
JayJay's Tip

Doing Seoul architecture as a "tour" wears you out before lunch. Instead, fit one in per neighborhood you're already going to — the DDP while you're shopping Dongdaemun, MMCA while you're in Samcheong, the Leeum while you're in Itaewon and Hannam. And at each building, look hard at just one thing — the material, the light, or the circulation — and the rest follows.

Need to know

Seoul's modern architecture worth a detour: the DDP (Dongdaemun Design Plaza), Zaha Hadid, 2014, a curved aluminum shell, interior roughly 10:00–20:00; the Leeum Museum of Art, 2004, with one building each by Mario Botta (traditional art), Jean Nouvel (contemporary), and Rem Koolhaas, on the Namsan slope in Hannam-dong; MMCA Seoul, 2013, new construction stitched into a former military command next to Gyeongbokgung; Kim Swoo-geun's brick work — Kyungdong Church (1981) and the former Space building, now ARARIO Museum in SPACE; Oil Tank Culture Park, five 1970s oil tanks in Mapo converted in 2017; and the SeMA Bunker in Yeouido. Nodeul Island, a Heatherwick Studio design with a 1.2km Han River skywalk, is due to open in 2028 and can't be visited yet. Confirm hours, admission, and closed days with each institution.
