Six day trips, sorted by what you actually want out of the day: history, the DMZ, scenery, an easy cheap outing, a theme park, or something active. Each one wins in one situation. Below is the time, the cost, and how to get there for each — starting with the mistakes people make most often.
First — the common mistakes
- Booking the DMZ three or four days before you go. The JSA (Joint Security Area) is frequently restricted or closed. Book that week and you often end up with only the half-day route, no JSA. Book as soon as your dates are fixed.
- Doing Nami Island, the Garden of Morning Calm, and Petite France by taxi. The three are close together, but public transport between them is awkward, and without the Gapyeong city tour bus you'll lose half the day to taxi fares and waiting.
- Everland on a weekend or public holiday. Queues run two to three times weekday length.
1. History — Suwon Hwaseong Fortress (the safe default)
- Getting there: Subway Line 1 to Suwon. About 1 hour from Seoul Station, roughly ₩1,900 each way. No booking.
- Cost: The wall is free. Haenggung Palace is about ₩1,500. The trolley is extra.
- Time: The full circuit is about 5.7km, walkable in 2–3 hours. Half a day is enough.
- Who it's for: Anyone who wants a proper Joseon-era site with no tour and no reservation. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
2. DMZ — the divided border (once in a lifetime)
- Getting there: A booked tour only. You cannot go independently. Passport required, book 3–4+ days ahead, dress code applies.
- Cost: About ₩55,000–90,000 — the most expensive option, because it's guided.
- Time: Half-day (Imjingak, Third Infiltration Tunnel, Dora Observatory) is 4–5 hours; full-day adds the JSA and runs 8–9 hours.
- Who it's for: Anyone interested in the geopolitics or modern history. Confirm whether the JSA is included when you book.
3. Scenery — Gapyeong (Nami Island + Garden of Morning Calm + Petite France)
- Getting there: ITX-Cheongchun train from Yongsan or Cheongnyangni to Gapyeong Station (about 1 hour 10). From there, the Gapyeong city tour bus day pass (around ₩8,000) covers all the stops.
- Cost: Nami Island entry plus return ferry is about ₩16,000. Each garden and village charges its own admission.
- Time: A full day. All three is tight — two is more comfortable.
- Who it's for: Nature, walking, photos, couples and families. Bundled shuttle tours from Seoul also exist.
4. Easy and cheap — Incheon (no planning needed)
- Getting there: Subway Line 1 to Incheon Station. About 1 hour from City Hall, roughly ₩1,700 each way. No booking.
- Cost: Chinatown, the Open Port historic area, and the Songwol-dong fairy-tale village are free. The jjajangmyeon museum is a small fee.
- Time: Half to full day. Add Wolmido and it's a full one.
- Who it's for: A day you don't want to plan. It's a subway ride, then walking and eating.
5. Theme park — Everland (Yongin)
- Getting there: Direct shuttle bus from Gangnam or Jamsil, about 1 hour, or subway plus bus.
- Cost: Day pass about ₩65,000.
- Time: A full day. Caribbean Bay (the water park) is a separate ticket.
- Who it's for: Rides and the zoo (pandas). Go on a weekday.
6. Something active — Gangchon Rail Bike
- Getting there: Gyeongchun Line to Gimyujeong Station (about 1 hour 10 from Cheongnyangni or Sangbong).
- Cost: About ₩40,000 for a two-seater. Reserve ahead on weekends.
- Time: The ride is about 1 hour, plus travel. Half a day.
- Who it's for: Anyone who wants to move a bit. You pedal along a disused rail line.
Reference — too far for a day trip
Jeonju and Gangneung are reachable by KTX, but the round trip eats the whole day. Stay a night instead.
What this means if you're visiting
- If you pick one, pick Suwon Hwaseong. No booking, cheap, subway, half a day.
- Book the DMZ the moment your plans are set. Wait and you lose the JSA.
- For Gapyeong, buy the city tour bus day pass first. Without it you spend the day in transit.
- Most of this runs on T-money. Only the DMZ tour is paid separately.
A Note From Daniel — our real human editorIf you're travelling with kids, Everland is the easy call from this list — no child dislikes a theme park, and it's the biggest and best-known one in the country. Plan to go in for the morning and stay until the parade after dark; the park is larger than people expect, so don't rush it. Seoul Land and Lotte World are the other two, and we'll compare all three in a separate piece.
Cheapest and simplest: Suwon Hwaseong (Line 1, ~₩1,900 each way, no booking) or Incheon (Line 1, ~₩1,700, no booking). Needs advance booking: DMZ (3–4+ days, passport, ~₩55,000–90,000) and — on weekends — Gangchon Rail Bike and Everland tickets. Gapyeong: take the ITX-Cheongchun to Gapyeong Station, then the ~₩8,000 city tour bus day pass. Jeonju and Gangneung are overnight trips, not day trips.
Soo's TipDecide the night before whether your day trip needs a booking, and handle it then. Suwon and Incheon you can do on a whim — walk to the subway and go. The DMZ, and rail bikes or Everland on a weekend, will be sold out or unavailable if you leave it to the morning. Sort the trips into "walk out the door" and "book first," and you won't waste a day standing at a ticket window.
