Autumn Foliage Day Trips From Seoul, Week by Week
Is Nami Island still worth it in mid-November? When does Seoraksan peak? Which trip fits which week, and which ones need a night.

Foliage isn't booked by date, it's booked by week. Nami Island lasts; Seoraksan is over quickly. Which trip you take in which week is most of the decision.
- Nami Island in mid-November? Yes. Nami's own guidance puts the peak from mid-October to early December, with ginkgo best from late October to mid-November.
- Seoraksan comes first. The Korea Forest Service forecasts its peak for October 20. It is about 2 hours 20 minutes by express bus from Seoul to Sokcho, so a day trip is long.
- Naejangsan and Gyeongju are early November (Naejangsan forecast: November 4) and are overnight trips, not day trips.
- Getting to Gapyeong: ITX-Cheongchun to Gapyeong Station (about 1 hour 10), then buy the city tour bus day pass first.
- Nami admission: ₩19,000 for adults including the return ferry (₩16,000 for the discounted category: middle and high school students, people 70 and over).
Which foliage trip fits which week?
| When | Where | Why then | Day trip or overnight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Around October 20 | Seoraksan (설악산) | Forecast peak October 20 | Long day trip or overnight |
| Late October – mid-November | Gapyeong: Nami Island (남이섬), Garden of Morning Calm (아침고요수목원) | Nami's ginkgo are best in this window | Day trip |
| Early November | Naejangsan (내장산) | Forecast peak November 4 | Overnight |
| Early to mid-November | Gyeongju (경주) | Bulguksa is a Korea Tourism Organization foliage pick | Overnight is easier |
The dates are forecasts from the Korea Forest Service (published September 22, 2026), which defines peak as 50% of leaves changed. Real dates move with the weather.
Is Nami Island still worth it in mid-November?
Yes, and the island says so itself. According to Nami's official FAQ, katsura and maple trees begin to colour in mid-October. Ginkgo turn later and for a shorter time, which makes them hard to predict, but late October to mid-November is when they look best. In mid-November, ginkgo leaves brought from Songpa District are laid along Songpa Ginkgo Road. Updates go out on Nami's official social accounts as the season moves.
Getting there:
- ITX-Cheongchun from Yongsan or Cheongnyangni to Gapyeong Station (가평역), about 1 hour 10.
- Buy the Gapyeong city tour bus day pass (around ₩8,000, check current price) before anything else. Without it, taxi fares and waiting eat the day.
- Nami Island is open 08:00–21:00, last admission 18:00. Garden of Morning Calm is open 365 days, 08:30–19:00, last admission 18:00.
All three stops in one day is tight; two is comfortable. More: day trips from Seoul.
Can you do Seoraksan as a day trip?
You can, but it's long. The forecast peak is October 20, which means the best week is close. From Seoul Express Bus Terminal to Sokcho takes about 2 hours 20 minutes each way, and Seoraksan's cable car draws long queues in foliage season and can change or stop for wind and fog. Check the bus timetable and the park's notices before you go. For booking, see booking intercity buses in Korea.
What about Naejangsan and Gyeongju?
Both peak in early November and both want a night. Naejangsan's forecast peak is November 4. For Gyeongju, see Gyeongju from Seoul: day trip or overnight.
Nami Island is the closest of these to Seoul, and I recommend it. It's known for its Metasequoia Road, which photographs beautifully, and in autumn the road is lined with colour. The island is fairly large, so I'd rent a bicycle. There's a rental point on the island with several kinds of bikes, including ones for two people, so you can choose by who you're travelling with.
If you haven't picked a date, start with Gapyeong. It has the longest peak window of the four.
Korea Forest Service 2026 forecast: Seoraksan October 20, Naejangsan November 4 (peak = 50% of leaves changed). Nami Island: peak mid-October to early December, ginkgo best late October to mid-November; adults ₩19,000 including the return ferry, open 08:00–21:00 (last admission 18:00). Garden of Morning Calm: daily 08:30–19:00 (last admission 18:00). Gapyeong: ITX-Cheongchun (about 1 hour 10), then the city tour bus day pass.
