Dongdaemun Shopping: Which Buildings Will Actually Sell to You

Dongdaemun is three markets stacked in one neighborhood: retail malls open till midnight, a fabric market that closes at 6pm, and wholesale towers that trade overnight in bulk. Here's which one is worth your evening.

Dongdaemun's mall towers lit up at midnight make a great travel photo. But a good share of them don't see you as a customer, and some have more than half their stores empty. Dongdaemun is three markets stacked into one neighborhood, and the door you walk through decides how your shopping goes.

The short version
  • Three kinds of Dongdaemun: retail malls (Doota Mall, 10:30 to midnight), the fabric and trimmings market (Dongdaemun Comprehensive Market, 08:00–18:00), and wholesale towers that trade in bulk overnight.
  • For buying one piece at a time: Doota Mall and Hyundai Outlet Dongdaemun (Mon–Thu 10:30–21:00, Fri–Sun until 21:30).
  • If you make things: Dongdaemun Comprehensive Market for fabric and trimmings, with craft supplies on the 5th floor (09:30–19:00). Closed Sundays, and the whole market shuts on the 2nd and 4th Sunday.
  • Wholesale towers are for looking: they open at night, run till morning and sell in bulk, so a request for one shirt may be turned down or priced differently.
  • Skip: by a July 2026 merchants' council count, Goodmorning City is 85% vacant, Hello APM 58% and Migliore 39%.
  • My verdict: do your clothes shopping at Doota, then spend any spare hour on the market's 5th floor. A post-midnight wholesale walk is sightseeing, not shopping.

Can tourists actually shop at Dongdaemun?

Yes, if you pick the right building.

Dongdaemun's fashion district splits into retail and wholesale. Retail malls sell to anyone, one piece at a time, with fitting rooms, card payment and tax refunds. Wholesale buildings are where shop owners from across Korea and abroad come at night to buy dozens of pieces at once. You can walk in, but the prices and the service aren't set up for a one-shirt customer.

What can you expect at the retail malls?

Doota Mall (두타몰) is the most tourist-friendly building in Dongdaemun. It's open every day of the year until midnight, so there's time after dinner. There's a tax refund desk and kiosk next to the information desk on the 5th floor, and per the mall, nearly every store offers tax refunds except the food court, restaurants and non-participating shops.

The refund rules are the national ones. Purchases of ₩15,000 or more qualify, and under ₩1,000,000 you can get an instant refund at the register (up to ₩5,000,000 for the whole stay). Store notices can be out of date, so go by our guide to Korea's tourist tax refund.

Hyundai Outlet Dongdaemun (현대아울렛 동대문점) sits right next to DDP. It's open 10:30–21:00 Monday to Thursday and 10:30–21:30 Friday to Sunday, so it closes well before Doota. It sometimes runs shorter hours on a given day, so check "today's hours" on its official page before you go.

It's also in the middle of a makeover aimed at overseas shoppers: four lower floors are being redone in the second half of 2026 (Newspim, July 2026). The basement level is becoming a "K-fashion hall," with domestic labels making up more than half its brands, and a global service lounge on the same floor is being expanded within the year to handle tax refunds and currency exchange in one place. A basement food hall was due to open in September, and the work rolls out in stages through the end of the year.

For shopping on your own in Dongdaemun, I'd recommend two places: Hyundai Outlet Dongdaemun and DunDun (던던). Hyundai Outlet is a city-center outlet run by the Hyundai Department Store Group. It has a CGV cinema, a Kyobo bookstore and an Outback Steakhouse, so it's an all-round mall where you can eat and do more than shop for clothes. Right next to it is DunDun, which opened fairly recently. It's huge, with Daiso, Uniqlo, 8seconds, 7-Eleven and Ashley all under one roof, so it's fun in a different way.

Worried about sizes? Korean clothes run small; what to do when Korean sizes don't fit will save you some fitting-room time.

Who is Dongdaemun Comprehensive Market for?

People who make things. For them, it's the best shopping in Seoul.

According to Seoul's official tourism site (updated September 2026), 80% of the fabric traded in Korea passes through Dongdaemun Comprehensive Market (동대문종합시장). Fabric and garment trimmings run 08:00–18:00; craft and accessory supplies on the 5th floor run 09:30–19:00. The 5th floor gathers beads, quilting and doll-making supplies, enough for half a day if you sew or craft. Exit 9 of Dongdaemun Station (Lines 1 and 4) connects to it underground.

Two things to watch:

  • Sundays. Fabric, trimmings and accessory shops close on Sundays, and the whole market shuts on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month.
  • Holidays. It also closes for the summer break, Chuseok, Seollal and New Year's Day.

My verdict: if you knit or sew, this market is the real reason to come to Dongdaemun. If you don't, one lap of the 5th floor is plenty.

Are the overnight wholesale towers worth a visit?

To look at, yes. To shop in, mostly no.

Many wholesale buildings open at night and close in the morning. According to the trade paper Korea Textile News (January 2026), DOOT trades from midnight to noon and closes from Friday noon until Sunday night. The same report says the APM buildings announced a switch to daytime hours in 2022, then shelved it and kept trading overnight. Buildings were still debating new hours in early 2026, so check the times right before you go.

What matters for a visitor: wholesale stalls expect customers buying several pieces at once. Ask for one and you may be turned down or quoted a separate single-item price, and don't expect fitting rooms. Watching bundles of stock move through the night is a sight in itself. Just don't mistake it for a shopping plan.

Are there places to skip?

Yes. Some of the older mall towers are emptying out.

By the Dongdaemun Fashion Town Tourism Special Zone council's July 2026 count, as reported by Asia Economy in August 2026, vacancy stood at about 99% at Maxtyle, 85% at Goodmorning City, 58% at Hello APM and 39% at Migliore, where mostly the lower-floor imported-clothing shops were still trading. Older travel guides still list these names as essential Dongdaemun malls. Today they aren't worth your time.

Where should you go after shopping in Dongdaemun?

YunaYuna's Tip

Here's my order: the market's 5th floor before dark, Doota after dinner, Hyundai Outlet before 9:30. A post-midnight wholesale walk is fine for a few photos. For shopping, I'd skip it.

Need to know

Dongdaemun mixes retail malls, a fabric and trimmings market, and wholesale towers in one neighborhood. To buy single items, go to Doota Mall (10:30 to midnight, tax refund desk on the 5th floor) or Hyundai Outlet Dongdaemun (Mon–Thu 10:30–21:00, Fri–Sun until 21:30). Dongdaemun Comprehensive Market sells fabric 08:00–18:00 and craft supplies 09:30–19:00; it's closed Sundays, entirely on the 2nd and 4th Sunday. Wholesale towers mostly trade night to morning and sell in bulk, so treat them as sightseeing. July 2026 vacancy: Goodmorning City 85%, Hello APM 58%, Migliore 39%. Tax refunds apply from ₩15,000 per purchase, with instant refunds under ₩1,000,000 (up to ₩5,000,000 per stay).
