Autumn Leaves in Seoul: Where to Go, and When
The colour moves through Seoul in a sequence. Which spots are worth it, which week to pick, and the one place that needs a booking.

Seoul's autumn colour doesn't arrive on one date. It travels — the northern mountains first, then the ginkgo-lined streets, then the palace gardens — and most disappointment comes from picking a good place in the wrong week.
- Timing (a forecast, not a promise): the Korea Forest Service's 2026 forecast puts the national peak at October 30 for ginkgo and October 31 for maples, where "peak" means about half the leaves have turned. Seoraksan peaks first, around October 20. For Seoul's street trees, plan on the last week of October into the first week of November and check again the week you fly.
- Easiest, no ticket: the Deoksugung (덕수궁) Stone Wall Path (0.3 km) and neighbouring Jeongdong-gil (정동길) (0.5 km).
- Ginkgo at scale: Seoul Forest (서울숲) has a grove of about 600 ginkgo trees.
- The one that needs planning: the Changdeokgung (창덕궁) Secret Garden — separate ticket, limited places per session, bookable from six days before.
- Landing in mid-November: most of Seoul's ginkgo are past peak by then. That is when a day trip to Nami Island works better (see autumn foliage day trips from Seoul).
When do the leaves actually peak in Seoul in 2026?
The Korea Forest Service published its 2026 foliage forecast on September 22. The first colour was spotted on September 14 at Jeombongsan, and the peak — defined as 50% of leaves changed — runs Seoraksan on October 20, Songnisan on October 28, Naejangsan on November 4. By species, ginkgo peak on October 30 and maples and oaks on October 31, about 0.8 days later than the five-year average.
Seoul isn't on the map. Last year's Korea Tourism Organization forecast gave Seoraksan October 23 and Bukhansan November 4 — twelve days apart. If the same gap holds this year, Seoul's mountains turn in the first days of November. That is an inference from one year, not a forecast.
Which Seoul spots are worth the trip?
| Spot | What it is | Length | Why it works |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deoksugung Stone Wall Path (덕수궁 돌담길) | Ginkgo and zelkova along the palace wall | 0.3 km | Short, so dense |
| Jeongdong-gil (정동길) | Ginkgo, zelkova, early-modern buildings | 0.5 km | Seoul's first designated "street to walk" |
| Gyeongbokgung wall and Samcheong-dong road (삼청동길) | Ginkgo along the wall | 1.2 km | A longer, slower walk |
| Seoul Forest (서울숲) | Ginkgo grove of about 600 trees | 0.5 km | Scale |
| Seokchon Lake (석촌호수) | Zelkova and cherry trees by the water | 2.6 km | Leaves and lake in one frame |
| Marronnier Park, Hyehwa (혜화 마로니에공원) | Horse-chestnut and maple | 0.5 km | Pairs with a Hyehwa evening |
One free afternoon? Pair Deoksugung and Jeongdong-gil. Together they are 0.8 km, take about an hour, and need no ticket. Want trees at scale, go to Seoul Forest. Want water, Seokchon Lake.
Is the Changdeokgung Secret Garden worth booking in autumn?
It is the only item on this list with a gate. The garden (Huwon, 후원) needs its own ticket on top of the palace ticket, places are limited per session, and booking opens six days before your visit at 10:00 a.m., first come first served. In November the garden runs 10:00–17:00 with last admission at 15:30; English tours run at 10:30, 11:30, 14:30 and 15:30.
The palace is closed on Mondays. That is a constraint to plan around, not a reason to skip. If you can't get a slot, the wall paths above give you a similar autumn without a booking.
What if you land in mid-November?
Seoul's street ginkgo are mostly past peak by then. Nami Island's own guidance runs later: peak from mid-October to early December, with ginkgo best from late October to mid-November. See the day trips guide. More on the seasons: when to visit Seoul.
If you walk the Deoksugung wall path and Jeongdong-gil, stop at Jeongdong 1928 Art Center (정동1928아트센터). The building alone is worth a look: it has an antique feel, and it dates from 1928. The ground floor has a small café and an exhibition space, and quite a few of the exhibitions are free. So you can look at the building, catch a free show if you're lucky, and rest in the café halfway through the walk.
If your dates don't line up, put two spots from this list on the same route. One of them will land near peak.
Korea Forest Service 2026 forecast: ginkgo October 30, maples October 31, Seoraksan October 20 (peak = 50% of leaves changed). Seoul's street trees: roughly the last week of October into the first week of November (inference, check the week you travel). Deoksugung Stone Wall Path 0.3 km, Jeongdong-gil 0.5 km, Seoul Forest ginkgo grove about 600 trees. Changdeokgung Secret Garden: separate ticket, limited places, booking opens six days before; November hours 10:00–17:00, last entry 15:30.
