The all-stop airport train (AREX 일반열차) — cheapest, best if your hotel is on the line
From Incheon Terminal 1 to Seoul Station (서울역) it's about ₩4,750 with a transit card, and 59 minutes. Terminal 2 is slightly more (~₩5,350, ~66 minutes). It stops at every station like a normal subway line, so you can get off at Hongik University Station (홍대입구역), Gongdeok, or Digital Media City and transfer from there. If your accommodation is anywhere near the airport-rail line — Seoul Station, Gongdeok, Hongdae (홍대), the Yeonnam (연남동) area — this is the sensible choice. (Still deciding where to base yourself? The express airport train (AREX 직통열차) — non-stop to Seoul Station, reserved seats
About 43 minutes from Terminal 1 to Seoul Station. Seats are assigned and there's proper luggage space. At the Seoul Station city airport terminal, some airlines let you check in and drop your bags for the flight home. Worth it when: your hotel is near Seoul Station, you have a lot of luggage, and you want speed. The limousine bus — door-to-door if there's a stop near your hotel
A bus can be the least tiring choice when its stop is close to your hotel: put your suitcase in the hold and avoid stairs and transfers. But a route number is not a neighborhood guarantee. The airport's current bus search lists 6015 for Myeongdong, 6001 for Seoul Station/Yongsan and Dongdaemun, 6005 for City Hall, 6020 for Yeoksam, and 6705 for Jamsil. Check the exact stop, terminal, departure and fare before buying; road traffic can change the journey time.
The taxi — competitive when three or four people arrive late with luggage
A regular taxi from Incheon to central Seoul can be expensive for one traveller but more reasonable split between three or four, especially with luggage. The fare depends on destination, traffic, tolls, taxi class and time. For a Seoul standard taxi, the airport's fare guide shows night surcharges of 20% from 10–11pm, 40% from 11pm–2am, and 20% from 2–4am; other taxi categories have different rules. Use the official taxi rank and don't follow anyone soliciting rides inside the terminal.
What if you land in Seoul between 1 and 4 a.m.?
The trains and most daytime buses stop overnight, but that does not leave taxis as the only moving option. Incheon's night-bus timetable includes routes such as N6000 (Gangnam Express Bus Terminal), N6002 (Cheongnyangni), N6701 (Dongdaemun Design Plaza) and N6703 (Gwangnaru). Departures are sparse and differ by terminal; check the current timetable and where you would still need to travel after getting off. If no bus fits, use an official taxi or wait in the terminal for the first train.
